After months of training and rehearsals, four boys of YARD EMPIRE YOUTH were rewarded for their hard work at the JCDC Parish finals for Music. YARD EMPIRE has been training the youngsters in the guitar, recorder and drums with a view to exposing them to the performing arts for their personal benefit. YARD EMPIRE has been working on community renewal in the Downtown Kingston areas, particularly Central Kingston where a number of communities are under the Zones of Special Operation. With an intention to empower and enlighten these young boys, they have been taught to read music and the techniques of playing acoustic guitar, the soprano recorder and hand drums. Confident in their training, the boys were entered in the competition and have come out victorious. Judges remarked on the “excellent performance, good technique and interpretation” for the gold medal pieces and gave encouragement in awarding the bronze. .
The medal tally of 3 gold medals (two for Guitar and one for recorder) and one bronze (for drumming) has brought a sense of pride to CEO Terri Salmon who said “These boys and their parents have stood with me and YARD, I would like to congratulate each parent and each child as we strive for higher heights”.
The boys progressed to the national level in April of 2023 and were victorious, claiming a trophy for Best Recorder Duo.
